5-Cozy,-Remote-Cabins-in-Northwestern-Ontario

It’s a good time to get away from crowds. If you want to enjoy privacy and seclusion in the great outdoors, take a look at this list of remote cabins and lodges for rent in Ontario.

Cozy up in a Lodge on a Lake

Bask in the calm

If you aren’t ready for the complete seclusion of an outpost cabin, but you still want to enjoy outdoor activities, such as fishing, in private, check out these remote lodges. The following are “Northern Ontario Travel” recommended accommodations remotely located on a lake or a river.

Bask in the calm of the great outdoors in these remote cabins for rent with no crowds, minimal boat traffic, and relaxed fishing. While an outpost cabin will provide the utmost privacy, it’s not suitable for everyone.

Relax in a Remote but Comfortable Location

You may prefer to have guides to show you around or help you settle in the place. Maybe you’d like to avail of a prepared plan including boats, motors, gas, meals, and housekeeping so you have nothing to worry about. Or maybe you simply want to make a few friends you can share fishing tips and stories with.

Some of these cabins to rent in Ontario don’t have to be reached by floatplane. Some are accessible by boat or by driving.

If you choose one of these boat-to lodges, you can take your personal boat or let the local outfitter pick you up in theirs.

Northwestern Ontario Cabins

#1 Ghost River Lodges

Located on Marchington Lake in Northwestern Ontario, Ghost River Lodges offer accommodations and cabin rentals in 3 different locations:

  • 8 lodges by Ghost River
  • 6 lodges above McDougall Falls
  • 2 outpost cabins in Sioux Lookout.

Visitors have free access to a chain of 14 lakes, Marchington being the main lake. For adventurers and wildlife enthusiasts, there are multiple scenic spots to enjoy.

It’s a journey through the breathtaking Canadian Shield wilderness to get to the accommodations. Visitors are picked up from the parking spot by the crew in a 26 ft. johnboat, then coast through 7 miles in 20 minutes to Windigo Falls. At the lower side of the falls, camping gear and baggage are loaded into another johnboat, and the final trip to the main lodges takes another 20 minutes.

#2 Halley’s Camps

Catch walleye, northern pike

Halley’s Camps at Kettle Falls boasts some of the best fishing in the Canadian outdoors and 3 types of accommodations and in multiple locations. They have boat-in, drive-in, and fly-in cabin rentals.

The resort has a spectacular view of the English River. It provides indoor entertainment, such as a conference/game room and a TV, as well as outdoor entertainment, such as trails to explore and sports like horseshoes, bocce ball, and badminton.

Halley’s Camps is a family business that started in 1946 and has been running for 74 years. They’re proud to claim that their fishermen guests return to their grounds yearly, as they don’t only offer a bounty of fish, like walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass; they also boast of the quality of their catch. In 2019, their visitors proudly reported their trophy catch amounting to over 1,500 fishes.

#3 Timber Point Camp

Unwind in the sauna

Timber Point Camp is located on the 10-mile long and 5,200 acre-wide Aerobus Lake. Aside from fishing, it also offers outdoor activities like bear hunting, ATV driving, hiking, mountain biking, and swimming. There’s also a sauna if you want to unwind indoors.

Timber Point Camp is a relatively small resort with 7 cabins and houses a maximum of 35 people, so you can stay away from crowds while still able to meet a few fishing, hunting, and wilderness enthusiasts.

Visitors are picked up from the parking spot with a pontoon boat, then coast through 2 miles across Aerobus Lake to get to the cabin rentals. The remote cabins for rent are fully equipped with cooking utensils, appliances, and beddings.

Timber Point Camp boasts some of the best lake trout and northern pike catch. They claim that their trophy trouts come in a whopping 9 to 12 lbs.

#4 Wine Lake Camp

Go back to the basics

Wine Lake Camp offers 8 remote cabins for rent accessible only by boat in Perrault Falls.

The entire hour-long trip to the main lodge covers 25 miles of water. Visitors are picked up from the parking spot by the crew with a Lund boat. In 18 miles, the group will stop by a waterfall where camping gear and baggage will be transferred to another Lund boat. It’s another 7-mile boat ride through the waters with wild rice and lilies before the visitors reach the accommodations.

Wine Lake Camp is environmentally conscious — recycling, composting, and using eco-friendly cleaning materials. Cabin rentals have built-in solar panels that provide light. It’s life at its simplest at the campgrounds, with a central, shared shower house providing hot water and a central spigot providing running water. For safety and hygiene, boil running water before use.

A Wine Lake Camp guest describes the place as a “[blend of] rustic lore, stewardship, and serenity with nature.” Long afternoons can be spent under the shade in hammocks. The remote cabins for rent each have porches with a view of the lake.
